Abstract
[Introduction]: One of the tenets of Australian archaeology is that there are certain artefact types for which archetypes and their distribution patterns have been confidently established. An example of this is the long-held belief that backed blades are only to be found in the southern two-thirds of this continent. Recent research in tropical Australia shows this not to be the case.
