Abstract

Mithra -originally the Indo-Iranian god of contracts—appears in Zoroastrianism and Hinduism, with both Avestan and Vedic rituals devoted to him, yet is best known in the Roman context where his cult enjoyed unparalleled popularity for several centuries. Indeed, only in the Roman context (where its actual connections with Iranian religion are unclear) does one typically speak of “Mithraism” as a distinct religion.
