My work has dealt with three themes: A. Peacekeeping and nation-building by the United Nations B. The inter-state politics of Western Europe, and the problems of integration in the European Economic Community C. Nuclear proliferation and British Commonwealth responsibilities in Asia and the Inda-Pacific region. I am not submitting papers on group C, since they are not clearly related to the other two themes . Each of the themes A and B includes an analysis of the relations between an international organisation and its member-states. One of the main objectives has been to determine whether and how far the Organisation has become, or may become in the future, an autonomous agent in international affairs. The question arose out of my interest in the nature of the modern nation-state, and the prospects of survival of the international system constituted by their power-political interactions.en_AU
