Abstract
Mr Beazley, the Australian Labor Party member for Fremantle, 1945-1977, had been associated with the Australian National University from its very beginnings. In 1949 he was appointed to the Interim Council of the University and was subsequently elected by the House of Representatives as a member of the first Council. He remained a member of Council until his appointment as Minister for Education in December 1972. Mr Beazley served on the University's Finance Committee from 1951-1954 and again from 1959-1972. He was Chairman of the Committee on Tuition Fees, a member of the Education Committee and a member of a number of various other ad hoc committees. Mr Beazley had a special sympathy for the problems of students, particularly those of the part-time students and served as a link between the community, the University and the Parliament. He graduated as a Master of Arts of the University in 1968 (ref. ANU Reporter, vol. 4, no. 1, p. 4, 23 Feb 1973).
