Title: Rarawai Mill from the air showing a section of the Ba River
Author(s): Photographer: not known
Series/Report no.: Fijian sugar industry
Description:
The mountains in the background separate the valley of the Ba and Sigatoka Rivers. They take their name from their highest peak, Koroimavua (3,200 ft) which appears almost directly above the Mill chimney. The skyline of this razor-backed range is known as 'the sleeping Fijian'. Some people, including Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna, saw Koroimavua in imagination as the head of a recumbant Fijian 'Big Head', with the figure of the warrior extending to the toes, which are visible on the skyline at the left of the photo. Others imagine the figure to lie in the opposite direction. The old track from Ba to Fort Carnarvon (Natuatuathoko) on the Sigatoka River, passes under the vertical cliff to the left of Koroimavua Mountain.
